Prof Jon Emery is the Professor of Family Medicine and Co-Director of the newly established Research Institute for Cancer Prevention, Screening and Early Detection (RISE), a joint initiative between the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, and the National Cancer Centre of Singapore.
Prof Jon was previously Professor of Primary Care Cancer Research at the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) in Melbourne. In his 10 years at Melbourne, he led the establishment of the world’s largest research group focused on cancer in primary care.
Following his medical training at Cambridge and Oxford, he has had a highly successful career in academic primary care, initially at Oxford, where he obtained his DPhil on cancer risk assessment tools, then as a Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist at Cambridge before taking up a Chair at the University of Western Australia.
He is an internationally recognised leader in primary care cancer research with specific expertise in the development and evaluation of complex interventions including computer decision support systems, new cancer diagnostic and screening technologies, models of cancer survivorship care, and the application of linked healthcare data to study patterns of cancer care. He was the inaugural Director of the Cancer Australia Primary Care Cancer Clinical Trials Group (PC4). He is currently leading several international trials related to targeted cancer early detection in primary care.
