Prof Derek Chew is the Professor / Director of Cardiology at the Victorian Heart Hospital. He was previously the Professor of Cardiology at Flinders University, Network Director of Cardiology for the Southern Adelaide Health Local Heath Network, and has recently served as the Commissioner on Excellence and Innovation in Health, South Australia. He has completed a Masters of Public Health, at the Harvard School of Public Health, with training in epidemiology, trial design, biostatistics, clinical trials and cost-effectiveness analysis.
Prof Derek Chew has an ongoing contribution to closing evidence gaps in cardiac care, the development of national cardiac guidelines, and the development of electronic systems to improve guideline translation. In collaboration with investigators nationally and internationally, he has studied system, physician and patient level factors contributing to sub-optimal care and outcome. He continues to conduct several randomized outcome studies that expand the evidence-base with pragmatic treatment strategies to a greater proportion of the clinical population. Furthermore, He holds several NHMRC and MRFF grants exploring health system adaption in the face current and emerging technologies in cardiac care and has secured over $16M in category 1 funding.
Focused on system factors driving evidence translation in cardiovascular care, has held or currently holds several national and international leadership roles including: co-lead of the SNAPSHOT ACS registry of heart attack care across Australia and New Zealand; development of the Heart Foundation/CSANZ ACS Guidelines 2006-2016 and serving on the European Society of Cardiology Guidelines for the management of ACS Writing committee 2015; previous chair of the Quality Standards Committee of Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand; chair of the Cardiovascular Disease Expert Advisory Group, the primary CV disease monitoring body of the AIHW; while also providing expert advice to the Australian Commission for Quality and Safety in Health care) and the Medicare Benefits Schedule Cardiac Review; and lead of the Heart and Vascular program of the SAHMRI and co-lead of the lifelong Health Theme. He has authored over 350 manuscripts and book chapters.
